VIVA VIGAN! Binatbatan Festival
For the past sixteen years, the festival of arts has been
successful in drumming up attention for Vigan’s ancestral houses. With the help
of national and local agencies, as well as media, arts and non-governmental
supporters, the festival has also succeeded in promoting other aspects of
Vigan. Its popularity has even benefited the whole tourism industry of the
northern region, bringing in tens of thousands of local and foreign tourists
curious to explore and have a “northern experience.”
On
the 3rd of May, the Feast of Apo Sto. Cristo Milagroso is observed with a mass
at the Simbaan a Basiit. This is a most significant religious celebration in
Vigan due to the many instances that the city was said to be saved by the Apo.
Another significant festival within the Viva Vigan festival is the Karbo
Festival, which was began in 2005. It’s aimed at giving importance to the
people behind Vigan’s agricultural industry and their contribution. The name of
the festival was taken from the words carabao, the Philippine water buffalo
used for farming, and bokel or seeds. During this day, gaily painted carabaos
are paraded and children show their artistic creations that make use of seeds.
Street
dancers of the Binatbatan Festival joyfully and cheerfully wave their
"batbat," some simulate the method done by abel-weavers in separating
the cottons as they gracefully perform the process artistically with the beat
of the drums and lyres rolling around the historic streets of the heritage city
of Vigan.
Binatbatan Street Dancers also carry with them a
basket at their back where they place the cotton pods taken from the kapas
sanglay tree. Kapas sanglay tree bears fruits that dries up at the
branches of the tree itself then just falls off after the fruit splits by
itself exposing the seed-filled cottons inside.
The
city’s impressive architecture matches its people. Local artists thrive in keeping
the city vibrant thru Viva Vigan Binatbatan Festival of the Arts.
”Binatbatan” is the process
of beating cotton pods to remove the seeds for Abel weaving. Which locals
interpreted into an occupational dance with the use of two sticks called
”batbat”. Binabatan street dance is one of the main attractions during the
week-long celebrations.
The
festival also showcases local art of mosaicking seeds called ”boklan”. Carabao painting, Kalesa parade, spoken
poetry, Abel decors, and fashion show. Plus a fun shoot, capturing the Vigan
experience.
Binatbatan
was introduced in 2002 to be part of the festival to commemorate the Abel Iloco
hand-loom weaving industry.
Viva
Vigan Binatbatan Festival of the Arts is celebrated yearly from the last week
of April to the first week of May.
